22nd TALGA Conference, 31st May – 3rd June 2017, Lockyer Valley, Queensland

All delegates attending this conference agreed it was a friendly, interesting and stimulating three days of learning about lavender, talking about lavender and most importantly, creating new friendships and networks that will support TALGA members now and in the future. We welcomed 4 delegates from our neighbours, the New Zealand Lavender Growers’ Association.

Lectures and farm visits embraced the theme “From Paddock to Plate” and highlighted members’ interest in organic farming( Rob Bauer’s Organic Vegetables), culinary lavender and it’s uses as a flavour and colour in cooking sweet and savoury dishes (Clare Dean, Port Arthur Lavender).

Members were treated to a choral introduction performed by local members of the “Something to Sing About Choir”, conducted by Gary Young, followed by a stimulating presentation on tourism by Mark Olsen.

New members, Jens Volkman (TAS), Gary Wood and Karla Champion(W.A.), shared their experiences of establishing new lavender farms in their areas which is always interesting to all members, new or old, no matter where they are located.

Dr Tony Robinson presented an up to date report on the plant pathogen Xylella fastidiosa and described steps the Federal Government is taking to prevent this entering Australia.

Workshops covered topics of interest including distillation of lavender oil, crafting with lavender, labeling products, OH&S on your farm.

A full write-up of the Conference will be published in the Lavender Journal next month for distribution to all members.

TALGA members are always willing to share their knowledge and encourage those people thinking of establishing a lavender farm, for hobby or business to join the Association and benefit from this wealth of knowledge.
